CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
Provides the training required and outlined under U.S. Department of Transportation Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (49CFR), Part 172, Subpart H, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR), Section 1.5 and the International Maritime Association (IMO) Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG), Section 1.3.
This course covers the skills needed to prepare, offer and accept ground, air and/or ocean shipments of hazardous materials/ dangerous goods. It is a systematic program that ensures a hazmat employee/student has familiarity with the general provisions of hazardous materials/dangerous goods in transportation, is able to recognize and identify hazardous materials/dangerous goods, has knowledge of specific requirements of the regulations applicable to functions performed by the employee/student, and has knowledge of emergency response information, self-protection measures and accident prevention methods and procedures. Instruction will focus on non-bulk packages offered into transportation.
NOTE: This course does not cover the regulations for offering fully regulated lithium batteries, radioactive (Class 7) or infectious shipments into transportation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:
- Identify who regulates what in terms of hazardous materials/dangerous goods in transportation. United States rules & regulations versus international rules & regulations.
- Navigate through the 49CFR, IATA (DGR) and IMO Dangerous Goods Code (IMDG).
- Classify products by hazard class, division and/or packing group.
- Recognize and identify United Nations (UN) Specification Packagings.
- Recognize and identify proper marks and labels for a shipment.
- Complete shipping documentation with the proper hazardous materials/dangerous goods information.
- Prepare, offer and accept most domestic and international ground, air and/or ocean shipments of hazardous materials/dangerous goods.
- Recognize and identify hazardous materials/dangerous goods in transportation.
- Understand the specific requirements of the regulations as it relates to their job function.
- Understand the precautions to be taken when handling hazardous materials/dangerous goods.
FINAL OBJECTIVE:
Through all of this, emphasis will be placed on each student’s responsibility when offering hazardous materials/dangerous goods into ground, air and/or ocean transportation.
