CATALOG DESCRIPTION:

An infectious substance is regulated as a hazardous material under the U.S. Department of Transportation Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (49CFR), Part 172, Subpart H. This training is designed to provide personnel with the up to date requirements for transport of infectious substances including the following subjects:

  1. Infectious substances classification system.
  2. New definition used in transport of infectious substances.
  3. Packaging, labeling, and shipping documentation for infectious, patient specimens and biological substances.
  4. Personnel preparation and planning for transport of infectious substances.
  5. Security plan requirements.
  6. Emergency response, incident report, and spill management.
  7. Package, packaging, marking & labeling, shipping and handling of infectious substances.
  8. Special requirements for carriage by aircraft.

Provides the training required and outlined under U.S. Department of Transportation Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations (49CFR), Part 172, Subpart H.

This course covers the skills needed to prepare, offer and accept infectious substance shipments for transportation.  It is a systematic program that ensures a hazmat employee/student has familiarity with the United States Regulations (49CFR) of hazardous materials in transportation and IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) and any changes that have occurred over the past two (2) years.  Instruction will focus on non-bulk packages offered into transportation by motor vehicle and aircraft.  

NOTE: This course does not cover the regulations for offering radioactive (Class 7) shipments into transportation.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE:

At the conclusion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Utilize the changes in the 49CFR / HMR & IATA DGR.
  2. Prepare, offer and accept most infectious substances within domestic and international shipments of hazardous materials.
  3. Recognize and identify hazard class 6.2, and related topics.
  4. Understand most of the specific requirements of the regulations as it relates to their job function.
  5. Identify the classification for Category A, Category B infectious substances, patient specimens, and biological substances.
  6. Distinguish and comprehend the packaging, labeling, shipping documentation, and personnel training requirement for Category A and Category B infectious substances, patient specimens, and biological substances.
  7. Manage and utilize the emergency response guidebook: emergency response, incident report, spill management, and personnel protection.
  8. Implement the special processes for carriage by aircraft.
  9. Recognize security risks related to the transportation of infectious shipments in commerce.
FINAL OBJECTIVE:

Through all of this, emphasis will be placed on each student’s responsibility when offering Infectious Substances into transportation.
